The future is uncertain, and we have to look beyond what we have today. I have met with industry key players like Tony Fernandes, the CEO of Air Asia and Tan Sri Dato' Seri Vincent Tan from Berjaya Corporation Berhad, and they raised the same concern. Facing these challenges of uncertainty means we cannot just move forward without any intervention plan.

Our vision is that of a Malaysia that is futureproof and ready to lead the 4th industrial revolution. We must not be afraid of progress and start now. So today, when I received a courtesy visit by Mr. Salihin Abang, the President of Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA) and his team, I know this will one of our many steps moving forward.

During our discussion, I have requested the assistance of MIA in coming up with the Accountancy Education Masterplan 2020-2030 which shall cover students of all ages from primary, secondary, tertiary and also TVET education.

By 2030, it is projected that Malaysia would need 60,000 accountants, however there is a huge shortfall currently. While the demand is growing, the supply-side is worrying. This is where MIA comes into the picture to regulate and develop the accountancy profession to support economic growth and nation building.

MIA has also offered its expertise to assist in MoE's efforts to face the challenges of IR4.0, as accountants will also have an important role to play. Malaysia, which currently chairs SEAMEO will also emphasise on the existing ASEAN CPA to facilitate mobility of accountancy services professionals across ASEAN Member States.

Through the strategic objectives, we hope to see the profession as accountants will stay relevant to business and market demands, nurtured with values and ethics, consistent with the global standards and best practices and also continuously uplift global recognition.

We need to do better in inspiring our students to be part of the future of our digitally and technologically driven country. Malaysia will continue to offer its expertise in accountancy education to ASEAN Member States in its efforts to promote adoption of best practices on standards and qualifications.
